ISLAMABAD: SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has confirmed that Starlink is awaiting approval from the Government of Pakistan to launch its satellite internet service in the country.

Responding to a Pakistani user on X who urged Musk to bring Starlink to Pakistan, the world’s richest person replied, “We are waiting for approval from the government.”

Mentioning Musk in a post on X, Pakistan user Sanam Jamali wrote, “Pakistan has approved Starlink! Now is the perfect time to bring your transformative internet service to our nation. Millions await the connectivity, education, and opportunities Starlink could offer. Please, expedite Starlink’s launch in Pakistan.”

Starlink is a SpaceX project which provides high-speed satellite internet and currently operates in 40 countries.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has confirmed ongoing negotiations between the government and Starlink, stating that the approval process is still in its initial stages.

Last week, State Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja told National Assembly that Starlink, the satellite internet company owned by Elon Musk has applied for a licence to introduce its services in Pakistan.

She said that two international companies, Starlink and Chinese satellite company Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology have applied for licences to operate in Pakistan.

In order to operate in Pakistan, only registered companies with the Securities & Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) can get licences.

Although applications from international firms are not being directly considered, those registered with SECP can pursue licenses.

Both Starlink, a SpaceX subsidiary focused on satellite internet services, and Shanghai Spacecom, a Chinese satellite communication firm, are looking to grow their presence in Pakistan within this framework, she wrote.

The minister emphasized that the licensing process is straightforward and generally free from complications after an application is filed.

Applications are processed by the PTA following the completion of necessary formalities and, if needed, a security clearance from the Ministry of Interior.
