Dodo: Lord of the Rings director parts with $10m to resurrect dead bird

WEB DESK: Famous “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson along with Fran Walsh decided part ways with a whopping $10 million to try to resurrect the long-extinct dodo bird.

According to sources, the duo invested the huge amount in the Colossal Biosciences, a biotechnology company focused on ‘de-extinction’ and species preservation.

The biotechnology company was founded in 2021 by entrepreneur Ben Lamm and the aptly named geneticist George Church.

The firm has set sights on something ambitious – restore the Tasmanian tiger and the dodo bird. It also previously set a target of rewriting elephant DNA with mammoth genes to create a mammoth-like embryo.

Colossal Biosciences said its missions aligns closely with Jackson and Walsh’s passion for protecting the endangered species the world over; in particular, the New Zealand.

The huge investment from the celebrated director and producer comes as the biotechnology firm continues to make further strides in its work.

The firm’s woolly mammoth project gained huge media attention and attracted many a curious investor.

Peter Jackson recently became a billionaire in 2021 after he sold off his digital effect studio “Weta Digital” for $1.3 billion. He has also been passionately supporting environmental causes for years now.
