ISLAMABAD: In an effort to enhance security across Pakistan, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has issued updated guidelines for banks and microfinance banks (MFBs) regarding the installation of CCTV cameras.

According to a recent circular, the SBP has relaxed the technical specifications, now requiring banks to install CCTV cameras with at least 5 megapixels (MPs), compared to the previously recommended 6 MPs. This includes all necessary equipment like storage devices and wiring.

To support a smooth transition, the SBP has directed banks and MFBs to complete the installation at key areas within existing branches located in major cities (Tier 1) and high-risk areas by March 31, 2025. Each institution will need to identify and define what constitutes a high-risk area and critical points within their branches, which should be documented in their internal standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The new requirements are also mandatory for all new branches to be opened and any renovations scheduled as part of the 2024 annual budget. For branches where CCTV procurement has not yet started, these guidelines will now apply.

In addition, banks have the option to expedite the installation of these upgraded security systems across their entire branch networks if they choose. The SBP has asked all banks and MFBs to submit an implementation plan detailing how they will follow these new instructions to the relevant Banking Supervision Department.

This move comes as part of broader efforts to boost security across Pakistan, including the ongoing Safe City Project in Karachi, which aims to install 10,000 new CCTV cameras to improve public safety.

The SBP’s updated guidelines provide flexibility while ensuring that key security measures are implemented efficiently in high-risk areas.
