WEB DESK: In a bold move to integrate its artificial intelligence (AI) technology into consumer products, Google has launched its new Pixel 9 series smartphones, accompanied by updated wearables including a smartwatch and wireless earbuds.

The announcement marks a significant step in Google’s ongoing effort to embed AI across its hardware lineup.

The latest Pixel smartphones feature advanced AI capabilities, including a unique Pixel-only function that allows users to search for information within screenshots. Additionally, Android users can now access Gemini, Google’s AI chatbot, as an overlay on other apps to assist with inquiries and content creation.

Rick Osterloh, Google’s Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, highlighted the significance of these advancements, stating, “There have been numerous promises and anticipated features in AI, but today we’re delivering real-world applications.”

Osterloh emphasised that the company is entering the “Gemini era,” a sentiment echoed at the larger-than-usual event held at Alphabet’s Bay View campus in Mountain View, California.

Traditionally, Google has introduced its Pixel phones in the autumn, but this year’s announcement was made in the summer, reflecting a strategic move to stay competitive with rivals.

This earlier timing comes ahead of Apple’s anticipated iPhone launch in September, which will also feature new AI-driven capabilities, including integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The event showcased several new Gemini functionalities through live demonstrations, although some features, such as cross-referencing a concert poster with the calendar app, experienced technical difficulties.

The Pixel 9, with a 6.3-inch display, is priced at $799, marking a $100 increase from its predecessor. Both the Pixel 9 and the larger 6.8-inch Pixel 9 Pro XL will start shipping later in August, while the Pixel 9 Pro, which boasts enhanced camera features, and the foldable Pixel 9 Pro Fold are scheduled for release in September.

In addition to the Pixel smartphones, Google introduced the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Buds Pro 2. Notably, the new Pixel Watch includes a “Loss of Pulse” feature, which uses algorithms to detect if a user’s heart has stopped and can automatically alert emergency services. This feature will be available in the United Kingdom and the European Union.

Google’s latest offerings not only highlight its commitment to advancing AI but also enhance the Android ecosystem, which powers over 80 per cent of smartphones globally.
