ISLAMABAD: With the launch of the Apple iPhone 16 less than five days away, speculation is mounting about a potential leap in storage capacity for the iPhone 16 Pro models.
A January report suggests that the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could see their maximum storage doubled to 2TB.
These rumours are linked to Apple’s possible adoption of Quad-Level Cell (QLC) NAND flash memory. QLC technology could allow Apple to increase storage capacity while potentially reducing costs compared to the current Triple-Level Cell (TLC) NAND.
However, it’s important to approach these rumours cautiously. Similar claims of 2TB storage options emerged for both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro but ultimately proved unfounded. Despite this, there are new factors that make the latest 2TB speculation more plausible.
If Apple introduces a 2TB variant, it is expected to be significantly more expensive than other models. However, it’s uncertain whether Apple will launch the 2TB version this soon, especially considering that many users find the 1TB variant sufficient.
The iPhone 16 Pro models are also rumoured to feature substantial camera upgrades, which could justify the need for increased storage. Reports suggest an improved ultra-wide camera with a 48-megapixel sensor, utilising the same pixel-binning technology as the main camera.
This enhancement, along with a wider f/2.2 aperture, is expected to deliver better low-light performance and support for 48-megapixel ProRaw photography.
The wait for the iPhone 16 launch is global, including among early buyers in Pakistan who are willing to pay a premium for Apple’s flagship devices. Although Apple does not have an official store in Pakistan, many consumers import the devices from abroad or purchase them from local distributors like Mercantile.
It’s worth noting that the iPhone 16 could be priced significantly higher than its predecessors. Currently, the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max 1TB is priced at Rs627,500 in Pakistan.
Given this, the iPhone 16 Pro Max 1TB could potentially reach up to Rs900,000, following the trend of new Apple devices being sold at high prices set by importers and distributors. For context, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was also priced up to Rs900,000 in Pakistan shortly after its release.
