CIRP study reveals top reasons why people upgrade their iPhones

iPhone 15 Pro Max out of box

WEB DESK: As anticipation builds for the upcoming iPhone 16 event next week, a new report from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) sheds light on why people choose to upgrade their iPhones.

Surprisingly, only 18 per cent of respondents cited new features as their primary motivation for purchasing a new device. So, what factors actually drive iPhone users to upgrade?

The CIRP study, titled “New Features Don’t Compel iPhone Purchases,” is based on feedback from iPhone buyers gathered between June 2023 and June 2024.

The study categorises the reasons for upgrading into six key areas: the old phone being obsolete, the old phone being lost, broken, or stolen, the desire for the latest features, carrier financial incentives, improved network quality such as 5G upgrades, and influence from friends or family who own iPhones.

The most common reason, cited by 44 per cent of respondents, was that their current phone had become obsolete. This category includes users whose previous phones were no longer functioning well. In contrast, 29 per cent of users upgraded because their old phone had been lost, stolen, or broken.

While only 18 per cent of respondents stated that new features – such as improved cameras or faster processors – were their primary reason for upgrading, it’s notable that these users already had functioning phones. The remaining 9 per cent of responses were linked to carrier incentives, better network performance, and social factors like friends or family owning iPhones.

iPhone upgrades in Pakistan: A status symbol and performance favourite

In Pakistan, iPhones are highly coveted, often seen as a status symbol. Despite not being officially sold in the country, many users go through distributors to get their hands on the latest models. However, a significant number of buyers don’t fully utilise the phone’s potential, focusing instead on showcasing the device as a luxury item.

At the same time, iPhone users in Pakistan appreciate the device for its superior performance, seamless user experience, and top-notch camera quality. These factors drive a strong demand for iPhones in the country, with many eagerly awaiting the release of the iPhone 16, even though its price is expected to be steep.

Much like other countries, Pakistan has a growing community of Apple enthusiasts who remain loyal to the brand, despite the high cost. With the launch of the iPhone 16 on the horizon, excitement is palpable – though, as expected, affordability will remain a significant concern.
