iPhones to gain enhanced third-party display and battery compatibility

WEB DESK: In a recent whitepaper, Apple has detailed its commitment to improving the repairability and longevity of its devices, particularly focusing on support for third-party components.

The tech giant announced significant updates that will allow better integration of third-party displays and batteries with iPhones, slated to take effect later in 2024.

One of the key highlights from the whitepaper is Apple’s decision to enable the True Tone feature for iPhones with third-party displays. True Tone, which adjusts the display’s color to match ambient lighting, typically requires precise calibration.

Currently, Apple disables True Tone when a third-party display is used due to the lack of default calibration, which can lead to unexpected behavior. However, starting later in 2024, users will be able to activate True Tone even with third-party screens. Apple will provide an option to deactivate True Tone in Settings if users are not satisfied with the display performance.

Apple also addressed concerns regarding battery health metrics for iPhones equipped with third-party batteries. At present, users with third-party batteries do not have access to accurate metrics like maximum capacity and cycle count.

Apple cited internal analyses showing that some third-party batteries are secondhand, with manipulated metrics to appear new.

To enhance transparency and support for third-party batteries, Apple will start displaying battery health metrics along with a notification indicating that the information cannot be verified by Apple. This update aims to provide users with better insight while acknowledging potential inaccuracies in third-party battery data.

These changes are expected to be implemented with the release of iOS 18 later this year. While Apple has not provided a specific timeline, the updates mark a significant step towards accommodating third-party repairs and extending the life of Apple devices.

By improving compatibility and support for third-party parts, Apple is taking strides to offer consumers more flexibility in maintaining their devices, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability and customer satisfaction.
