Leaks: iPhone 15 to sport a USB-C?

iPhone 15 Pro Max USB-C

TECH DESK: In a significant departure from its longstanding tradition, Apple is reportedly set to introduce USB-C connectors in its upcoming iPhone 15 series, marking the end of the signature Lightning port era. This revelation has been fueled by a series of leaked images and reports from various tech websites.

The Leaks

Images of the alleged USB-C connectors for the iPhone 15 series have been making rounds on the internet. These images, shared by leakers, @lipilipsi and @John011235 (on X), showcase the connectors attached to flexible PCB assemblies. The leaks suggest that these connectors are designed for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Plus, and the standard iPhone 15.

Technical Insights

The transition to USB-C is groundbreaking, but it is essential to note the distinctions within the series. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are rumored to feature USB 2.0 standard connectors, offering data transfer speeds of 480 Mbps and charging speeds up to 20W. In contrast, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are expected to be equipped with USB 3.2 connectors, marking the first significant speed boost for iPhones since 2012.

However, Apple might have some restrictions in place. Reports suggest that the company will limit data transfer and charging speeds on USB-C cables and accessories not certified under its Made for iPhone (MFi) program.

Why the Shift?

Several factors could be driving this change. Apple has already transitioned from the Lightning port to USB-C for its iPad lineup. To continue its dominance in the European market, Apple would need to align with the European Union’s legislation, which mandates the use of standard ports..

Additional Rumors

Beyond the USB-C transition, the iPhone 15 series might see other significant changes. There’s chatter about Apple potentially ditching the beloved Mute Switch in the iPhone 15 Pro models, replacing it with a versatile Action Button. This button could serve multiple functions, from triggering the camera and Siri to other iPhone features.

The Big Reveal

The tech community is buzzing with anticipation for Apple’s official announcement. Rumors point towards a grand iPhone 15 series keynote scheduled for September 12 or 13.
