Mafia: The Old Country’s gameplay, story and editions revealed

Mafia: The Old Country

WEB DESK: 2K and Hangar 13 have finally lifted the curtain on Mafia: The Old Country, giving fans their first real look at gameplay and the story behind the series’ new chapter. Launching on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and NVIDIA GeForce NOW on August 8, the game takes players deep into early 1900s Sicily, a world of grit, loyalty, and betrayal.

The official gameplay trailer dropped alongside a behind-the-scenes Breaking Omerta developer video, where Hangar 13 shared how they recreated the streets, hills, and smoky tavern corners of old Sicily. The result is a living, breathing setting for a mafia origin story unlike anything in the series so far.

An origin story in blood and loyalty

At the heart of Mafia: The Old Country is Enzo Favara, a man bound by loyalty, honour, and obedience, the very code that draws him into Don Torrisi’s crime family. The game promises a tight, linear narrative that swaps bloated open-world filler for sharp storytelling and high-stakes action. Expect brutal melee combat, tense gunfights, and fast getaways, sometimes on horseback, sometimes in the era’s boxy motorcars.

This is the first Mafia title to be built on Unreal Engine 5, giving the game a cinematic quality that blends historic authenticity with striking detail. According to Hangar 13 president Nick Baynes, that focus allows them to deliver a “gritty, grounded, brutal and emotional” experience that doesn’t demand hundreds of hours to enjoy.

Editions, bonuses, and the criminal toolkit

Mafia: The Old Country will launch in two editions. The Standard Edition ($49.99) includes the base game, while the Deluxe Edition ($59.99) packs in the Padrino Pack, the Gatto Nero Pack, exclusive weapons, outfits, vehicles, a digital soundtrack, and an artbook. Pre-orders for either edition unlock the Soldato Pack, which comes with themed gear, weapons, and even a custom horse.

First introduced in 2002, the Mafia franchise has sold over 38 million copies worldwide. With this latest entry, the series is going further back than ever before, offering a look at the origins of Cosa Nostra and the birth of its code.

For fans of tight, story-driven crime sagas, Mafia: The Old Country looks set to be a return to form, and maybe the most personal tale the series has told yet.
