Netflix introduces ‘Game Controller’ app for iOS

Netflix App

Tech Desk: In a bold move that underscores its ambitions beyond traditional streaming, Netflix has introduced a game controller app for iOS, aiming to redefine the TV gaming experience for its vast user base. As the lines between entertainment mediums blur, this initiative by Netflix signals its intent to be at the forefront of this convergence. Here’s a deep dive into what this means for the streaming behemoth and its audience:

The application

“Netflix Game Controller,” is designed to allow users to play Netflix games on their TV sets. Although the app is available for download, it currently doesn’t list any compatible games. But its description hints at the upcoming feature with a tagline saying, “Coming soon to Netflix.”

How It Works

The app allows users to connect their phones to their TVs and use them as controllers for playing games available on the platform. Upon launching the app, users are prompted to select a game on their TV and follow the connection instructions. However, as of now, this functionality seems to be in its beta phase, and some devices might not be supported.

Netflix’s Gaming Journey

The streaming giant has been actively releasing new games for its subscribers to play on their mobile devices. Titles such as Laya’s Horizon, World of Goo Remastered, and Oxenfree II: Lost Signals have been introduced in recent months. With this new app, it seems Netflix is gearing up to bring these gaming experiences to the big screens of its subscribers.

Cloud Gaming Ambitions

Netflix has previously hinted at its interest in cloud gaming. Last year, Netflix’s VP of gaming, Mike Verdu, mentioned the company’s exploration into cloud gaming. Furthermore, Leanne Loombe, Netflix’s VP of external games, emphasized the company’s vision to make games “playable on every Netflix device.”

Current Availability

As of now, the Game Controller app is exclusively available on iOS. There’s no word on its availability on Android or other platforms. Additionally, there aren’t any Netflix games available on platforms like Android TV or Apple TV yet.

While Netflix has made a promising move with the introduction of its game controller app, the actual gaming experience on TVs is still awaited. It will be interesting to see how this venture shapes up and competes with other gaming platforms in the market.
