New undersea cable to improve Internet connectivity across Pakistan

2Africa cable

KARACHI: A new undersea cable is being installed to enhance and modernize internet connectivity across Pakistan, much to the relief of the internet users who have been battling with slow speed for the past seven months.

Known as the 2Africa Cable, this massive 45,000-kilometer project is being implemented by a French firm as part of a global initiative led by Meta (formerly Facebook), the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has confirmed.

The physical connectivity of the 2Africa Cable has been completed and it will connect 46 landing stations across Europe, Africa, and Asia, linking Pakistan to one of the world’s largest internet infrastructure projects.

Once operational, the cable is expected to add up to 24 terabytes of bandwidth, addressing persistent complaints about slow internet speeds and improving connectivity for widely used platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram.

Scheduled to become fully functional by 2025, the project is part of a global initiative aimed at transforming internet infrastructure. For Pakistani users, this will mean access to one of the fastest internet services globally, effectively resolving existing connectivity issues.

China Mobile International and Meta are the consortium members overseeing the Karachi segment of the cable. The two organizations have partnered with Transworld Associates to manage and operate the landing station for the cable in Pakistan.
