Nintendo confirms new Switch will support old games

WEB DESK: Nintendo confirmed that its upcoming console, the successor to the Nintendo Switch, will support existing Switch games.

The company announced this during its Corporate Management Policy Briefing. During the briefing, Nintendo stated that games can easily transfer their Nintendo Switch Online services and accounts to the new system.

Backward compatibility remains a contentious issue among major gaming console manufactures. While both the Xbox Series X and the Playstation 5 offer extensive backward compatibility, allowing players to access a wide array of games from previous generations, the transition from the Wii U to the Switch involved a shift from the cartridges. This created extensive issues for Nintendo in backward compatibility.

Players were then forced to rely on the hope that Nintendo will release mastered versions or include older titles in the Nintendo Switch online library.

Although Nintendo made some classic titles accessible on the Switch, many older games remain out of reach. The company further limited access to its back catalogue by shutting down the Wii U and the 3DS e-shop.

As for the successor, reports indicate that it will include a card slot, but it remains uncertain whether it will support physical Switch game cartridges. It is also unclear if players can transfer their digital libraries to the new console using the Nintendo Account system.
