TECH DESK: Smartphone technology is evolving at such rapid speed that some details can occasionally slip through the cracks. But every so often, a change emerges that’s simply too monumental to go unnoticed. Tech blogger Mishaal Rahman recently unveiled one such revelation: Samsung, contrary to expectations, introduced device-to-device eSIM transfer and (physical Sim) pSIM-to-eSIM conversion within their One UI 5.1 update.
Surprisingly, this has been made possible even before Google, android’s parent organization, rolled out the feature on their pure-android Pixel devices.
In Pakistan, the only networks that support eSIM functionality are Jazz and Ufone
Rahman also gave out a detailed rundown about navigating the feature. For those eager to test it out here are the steps reproduced:
eSIM Transfer:
- Open ‘Settings’
- Navigate to ‘Connections’
- Open ‘SIM manager’
- Choose ‘add eSIM’
- Select ‘other ways to connect to a mobile network’
- Click ‘transfer SIM from another device’
- Unlock your older Samsung device (provided it’s running on One UI 5.1+ and has a secure lock screen) and place it alongside your current phone.
- Click ‘Transfer’ on your other device.
pSIM-to-eSIM Conversion:
- Head over to ‘Settings’
- Click on ‘Connections’
- Open ‘SIM manager’
- Navigate to settings for your physical SIM
- Choose ‘convert to eSIM’
However, a word of caution: these features, while exciting, come with a few considerations.
Presently, the eSIM transfer functionality is exclusive to Samsung devices running One UI 5.1+. Furthermore, if you have reservations about converting your physical SIM to an eSIM due to concerns about future device switches, you’re not alone.
COMPATIBLE DEVICES:
If you’re curious about the compatibility of this feature, here are the Galaxy devices that support eSIM:
Galaxy S series: S21, S22, and S23 ranges.
Galaxy Z series: Z Fold3, Z Fold4, Flip3, and Flip4.
Galaxy Note series: Note20 and Note20 Ultra.
In Pakistan, the only networks that support eSIM functionality are Jazz and Ufone.
A Glimpse into eSIM Technology:
The rise of eSIMs represents a significant change in smartphone tech. Unlike traditional SIMs, eSIMs are built into the phone’s motherboard. While some might be wary of this, given the ease of switching physical SIMs, eSIMs offer seamless network transitions. Users can easily change carriers by scanning a QR code, and for those using dual-SIMs, switching accounts becomes even more straightforward.
OUR THOUGHTS
Samsung’s silent introduction of eSIM transfer and pSIM-to-eSIM conversion showcases their commitment to advancing technology. As eSIM technology continues to mature, it’s only a matter of time before more manufacturers and carriers jump on the bandwagon, ensuring a seamless and efficient user experience.
