Samsung ranks second in global tablet market despite sales decline

WEB DESK: Samsung held its position as the world’s second-largest tablet manufacturer in the first quarter of 2024, despite a slight decline in sales.

According to the latest data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung shipped 6.7 million tablets during Q1 2024, securing a 21.7 per cent share of the global market.

However, this represented a 5.8 per cent decrease in shipments compared to the same period last year.

Apple maintained its lead, shipping 9.9 million iPads and capturing a 32 per cent market share, but it also experienced an 8.5 per cent drop in sales.

Apple’s decline might be linked to the absence of new product launches, with its last major iPad release occurring over a year and a half ago.

However, the tech giant is expected to launch new models soon, including two iPad Pros with OLED screens and M4 chips, as well as two iPad Airs with M2 chips.

While the major brands saw a downturn, Chinese manufacturers reported significant growth.

Huawei’s tablet sales increased by 43.6 per cent to 2.9 million units, likely due to strong performance in China, achieving a 9.4 per cent market share.

Lenovo grew by 13.2 per cent year-over-year, shipping 2.1 million tablets and capturing a 7 per cent market share. Xiaomi saw a 92.6 per cent surge in tablet shipments, reaching 1.8 million units and a 5.9 per cent market share.

Overall, the global tablet market grew slightly, with total shipments reaching 30.8 million units, a 0.5 per cent increase from the previous year.

Other brands, not among the major players, accounted for 24 per cent of all tablet sales in the first quarter of 2024.
