Samsung surpasses Apple in US smartphone sales: CIRP report

samsung vs apple sales

WEB DESK: A recent report by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) sheds light on the competitive landscape of smartphone sales in the United States over the past year.

Covering the period from April 2023 to March 2024, the study reveals that while Samsung outsold Apple in total smartphone units, Apple captured a significantly larger share of the high-end market.

According to the CIRP data, Samsung secured a 38 per cent market share in the US, placing it ahead of Apple, which held a 33 per cent share. Despite the narrow gap, the nature of their sales differed notably. Motorola ranked third with a 13 per cent market share, followed by various other manufacturers with a combined 10 per cent, and Google trailing with 6 per cent.

A deeper analysis of the CIRP report highlights Apple’s success in the premium segment. A substantial 64 per cent of Apple’s iPhone sales were categorized as “flagship models,” compared to Samsung’s 42 per cent.

CIRP defines “flagship” models as the current family of devices, including the iPhone 15 series for Apple and the Galaxy S23, S24, Flip, and Fold models for Samsung.

The report further illustrates the contrasting sales strategies of the two tech giants. For Apple, the iPhone SE and older models accounted for about one-third of its US sales, whereas Samsung’s more affordable and older models comprised nearly 60 per cent of its sales.

This indicates that Apple’s strength lies in its ability to sell premium smartphones at a higher price point, thereby generating more revenue despite selling fewer units overall.

In summary, the CIRP report underscores Samsung’s lead in overall smartphone sales in the US, while Apple continues to dominate the high-end market with its flagship models, reinforcing its position as a premium brand.
