Samsung surpasses Apple and Xiaomi in smartphone sales

WEB DESK: Samsung has successfully maintained its leading position in the global smartphone market, outperforming competitors such as Apple and various Chinese brands.

The South Korean tech giant not only held its ground but also increased its phone sales compared to the previous year, securing the top spot in the industry.

According to the latest report from market research firm IDC, Samsung emerged as the world’s largest smartphone brand in terms of shipments.

The company shipped 53.9 million smartphones during the second quarter of 2024, from April to June, capturing an 18.9 per cent share of the market. This marks a 0.7 per cent growth in shipments compared to the same period last year.

The success of the Galaxy S24 series contributed significantly to Samsung’s robust performance. Additionally, the company is optimistic about the pre-order sales of its latest foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Apple secured the second position by shipping 45.2 million iPhones, which accounts for 15.8 per cent of the global market share. This represents a 1.5 per cent increase in shipments from the previous year.

Despite outpacing Samsung in the third quarter of last year, Apple could not maintain that momentum this time around.

Xiaomi ranked third globally, shipping 42.3 million smartphones and capturing a 14.8 per cent market share. The Chinese company saw a substantial 27.4 per cent increase in shipments compared to last year, marking a significant rise.

Vivo also demonstrated notable growth, shipping 25.9 million smartphones and securing a 9.1 per cent market share. This reflects a 21.9 per cent improvement from the second quarter of the previous year.

OPPO followed closely, shipping 25.8 million smartphones and capturing a 9 per cent share of the global market. This represents a 1.8 per cent increase in shipments year-over-year.

Overall, the global smartphone market experienced a 6.5 per cent growth compared to last year, with Xiaomi and Vivo being the biggest gainers. Samsung continues to lead the market with a three-point advantage over Apple, solidifying its position at the top of the industry.
