Samsung to upgrade Bixby with ChatGPT-like generative AI capabilities

WEB DESK: Samsung introduced Galaxy AI, a suite of AI-powered features, along with Generative AI, through the Galaxy S24 earlier this year. Just recently, these features have been extended to older flagships like the Galaxy S23 with the One UI 6.1 update.

While there was anticipation for generative AI to enhance Bixby’s capabilities, this integration has not yet occurred. However, a new report suggests it is on the horizon.

According to a high-ranking executive at Samsung Electronics speaking to CNBC, Bixby is slated to receive ChatGPT-like chatbot capabilities fueled by generative AI.

Won-joon Choi, Executive Vice President of Samsung MX, expressed, “With the advent of generative AI and LLM (large language model) technology, I believe we need to redefine Bixby’s role, empowering it with generative AI to enhance its intelligence in the future.”

Bixby first debuted alongside the Galaxy S8 in 2017, offering unique functionalities such as adjusting phone settings and executing advanced actions within Samsung’s native apps.

However, Samsung later shifted its focus, attempting to align Bixby more closely with competitors like Alexa and Google Assistant.

This shift led to Bixby losing ground and fading from the forefront of user attention.

Now, Samsung appears to be revitalising Bixby’s capabilities with the integration of generative AI and LLM, although specific details have not yet been disclosed.

Google has already introduced Gemini, an LLM-powered AI chatbot available on Pixel and Galaxy phones in select markets.

Additionally, ChatGPT is accessible on nearly all smartphones, highlighting Samsung’s lag in this area.

Nevertheless, Samsung has launched its own AI model named Samsung Gauss, with certain Galaxy AI features utilising this model. There’s potential for the same model to empower Bixby in the future.

Samsung has affirmed its commitment to maintaining Bixby alongside Galaxy AI, promising future enhancements for both Bixby and SmartThings through AI integration.
