Sony PlayStation 5 prices climb in Pakistan after US increase

Sony PS5 Pro price increased

ISLAMABAD: Sony has raised the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States, a move that has affected the gaming console’s price in the Pakistani market as well.

The hike affects all three PS5 models, with the disc version now priced at $549.99, the Digital Edition at $499.99, and the high-performance PS5 Pro climbing to $749.99, making it the priciest mainstream gaming console available today.

The impact is being felt locally as well, with shopkeepers confirming that PS5 prices in Pakistan have risen by Rs10,000 to Rs20,000 depending on the model.

The brand new PS5 Pro 2TB is now retailing for as much as Rs260,000 in major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. Meanwhile, the PS5 Slim 1TB model is being sold for around Rs180,000, reflecting how the global hike is shaping local market dynamics.

Despite the hefty price tags, the PS5 remains in demand in Pakistan. While it is not a household item for every family, those who can afford it, often buying it for themselves or for their children, continue to drive its popularity.

How prices compare with launch

When the PlayStation 5 first launched in November 2020, the disc version was priced at $499 (about Rs141,800 at the time), while the Digital Edition came in at $399 (around Rs113,000). The latest adjustment means both core models have now seen a $50 increase, or roughly Rs14,000, over their original launch price.

The PS5 Pro, introduced in late 2024 with improved graphics and performance, has taken centre stage as Sony’s premium offering.

A broader industry trend

Sony’s decision is in step with a wider industry pattern. Microsoft recently raised the prices of its Xbox Series S and X consoles, introducing a 2TB Series X priced at $729 (roughly Rs207,000). Nintendo, too, has adjusted pricing on its Switch hardware and accessories.

For now, Sony has confirmed that PS5 accessories remain unaffected. The optional disc drive is still priced at $79.99 (about Rs22,700), with no announced changes to controllers or other add-ons.

However, some gaming shops in Islamabad are selling it for as high as Rs40,000, nearly double its US price.
