PIA launches direct flights from Lahore to Baku

LAHORE: The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) launched its direct flights from Lahore to Baku Azerbaijan on Sunday as part of its ongoing efforts to expand international connectivity and boost tourism. 

On June 16, 2023, Pakistan and Azerbaijan had agreed to start flights between Islamabad and Baku at a meeting held in Baku between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev.

Speaking at a joint press conference after the meeting, the two leaders said that they have agreed to introduce flights between the two countries.

Addressing the launching ceremony in Lahore, Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif said the positive outcomes of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to strengthen ties with various countries are beginning to emerge.

He said under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s dynamic leadership, Pakistan’ economy is heading forward on the path of progress, after coming out of difficult times.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his happiness over the launch of PIA’s direct flights from Lahore to Baku.

In a statement, he said the initiation of direct flights between Lahore and Baku will help promote the tourism sector.

The prime minister further the PIA will soon start direct flights with other friendly countries as well.

Terming the development a significant diplomatic achievement for Pakistan, he said Azerbaijan is one of Pakistan’s closest friends in the region. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to fostering collaboration with Azerbaijan in tourism and other sectors.
