KARACHI: In yet another potential upgrade to Karachi’s public transportation infrastructure, the Sindh government has decided to introduce 180 solar-powered electric buses along the feeder routes of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
The initiative, revealed during a meeting between Sindh Chief Minister Justice (Retd) Maqbool Baqar and an Asian Development Bank (ADB) delegation led by Principal Director Ms. F. Cleo Kawawaki, aims to enhance the efficiency of public transport while minimizing the environmental impact.
The electric buses are set to service the Green and Orange Lines of the BRT, which currently handle an estimated 50,000 passengers daily in Karachi. This integration is expected to enhance the sustainability of Karachi’s transport system. The Secretary of Transport announced the induction of 170-180 electric buses, noting the potential for partial solarisation to reduce operational costs without the need for subsidies.

The meeting also covered the West Karachi Recycled Water Project, addressing the city’s acute water stress. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), with the ADB as transaction advisor, is considering a proposal for a comprehensive wastewater treatment system near the Sindh Industrial Trade Estate. This initiative is pivotal given Karachi’s water supply shortfall – the city needs 1,100 MIGD but currently receives only 550 MIGD.
Further discussions included the TP-4 Wastewater Treatment and Recycling Public-Private Partnership project. This project, focusing on recycling water for industrial use, has a treatment capacity of 120 MIGD, with plans to double in the future.
The connection of over 30 sewerage conduits to the TP4 facility is anticipated, significantly contributing to addressing Karachi’s water shortage. The ADB’s involvement in these projects underscores their commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives in the region.
