5.7 magnitude earthquake shakes Taiwan

TAINAN: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Dongshan district Tainan City in Taiwan at 7:49 am local time Sunday.
The tremors occurred at a depth of 8.1 kilometres and were felt throughout the independent island.

The epicentre was located approximately 43.9 kilometres northeast of Tainan, with the tremors registered an intensity of 4 on the country’s seven-tier scale.
The impacted regions besides Tainan include Chiayi, Kaosiung, Yunlin and Changhua.
Shortly after the main quake, a magnitude 4.8 aftershock was also recorded in the same area. Its epicentre was also recorded in Dongshan, and is located about 42.6 kilometres northeast of the Taunan city. Its depth was recorded at 6.8 kilometres.
No immediate reports of damage was reported from either incident.
The latest seismic activity follows a series of tremors in the region, including a significant 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck near the Tainan’s border with Chiayi on January 21.

The recent quakes are considered aftershocks of the earlier earthquake, and has raised concerns among residents in southern Taiwan, as well.
