ANKARA: Unexpected heavy rainfall severely disrupted Ankara’s transportation system on Thursday, flooding entire metro stations and leaving commuters stranded.

According to reports, the entire city’s transportation network was affected, with metro stations flooded and roads submerged in inches-deep water.

The heavy shower of rain began on Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday with the city receiving over 60 millimeters of rainfall in just two days.

Local authorities took action by displaying information notices at metro entrances, informing passengers of service suspensions between affected stations. Meanwhile, the authorities also had to arrange alternative bus transportation for stranded commuters.

The heavy rainfall on Ankara streets caused chaos as deep pools of water flooded the roads, disrupting traffic flow. Local news outlets reported several stranded vehicles and traffic accidents.

The city’s residents also contended with flooded homes and workplaces. The local government organized and led rescue and evacuation efforts to assist the affected residents.

Videos and pictures shared on social media depicted relentless rain pouring over the city, flooding roads and metro stations. Some videos also showed water seeping into homes and offices.

Despite widespread infrastructure damage, no human casualties were reported. The city’s mayor revealed that authorities had received more than a thousand flooding reports, the majority of which were immediately addressed.
