AMRITSAR: A trade union affiliated with India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protested on Friday (November 8) against Justin Trudeau, burning an effigy of the Canadian Prime Minister.
The protesters, in the northern state of Punjab, said Trudeau was trying to create a rift between Hindus and Sikhs. They also condemned a recent attack on a Hindu temple in Canada.
Diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Ottawa have soured recently due to tit-for-tat diplomatic expulsions over allegations related to the killing of a Sikh leader on Canadian soil last year.
Punjab Secretary of BJP trade union, Raman Kumar said, “We have burnt his (Justin Trudeau) effigy today to protest against the Hindu-Sikh rift that has been created by him. The Hindu-Sikh brotherhood cannot be diminished. Hindus cannot forget the sacrifices made by Sikh Gurus (spiritual leaders). We are one. No matter how many Trudeaus come, Hindus and Sikhs cannot be divided.”
