Canada endures severe cold as mercury drops dangerously low


Canada is currently in grips of extremely cold weather, with temperatures in Toronto expected to drop to -35 degrees Celsius.

TORONTO: Canada is currently in grips of extremely cold weather, with temperatures in Toronto expected to drop to -35 degrees Celsius.

In response to the extreme cold, the Canadian government issued a red alert. It also advised residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

Meanwhile, the nation’s capital, Ottawa, recorded -29 degree Celsius, with the country’s meteorological office predicting a mix of cloudy and sunny weather throughout the day.

The winds were expected to blow at over 15 kilometres per hour (kph), raising the risk of frostbite. The Canadian met office did not deem it dire enough to issue a warning however.

Warnings were issued in northern part of the country, where temperatures were expected to drop to as low as -45 degrees Celsius.

The phenomenon is known as the polar vortex, which is affecting huge areas of Ontario and the Quebec provinces, as well.

Local governments across the North American country urged residents to stay indoors and take necessary precautions to stay warm. Service response was initiated for residents, with more support announced for the homeless populace.
