Closest geographical point between the US and Russia is 2.5 miles apart
WEB DESK: For those who perceive Russia as a distant land from the United States, a surprising geographical fact brings it much closer to home. Nestled in the Bering Strait, merely 55 miles from some points in the United States, lie two intriguing islands: Big Diomede and Little Diomede.
Big Diomede belongs to Russia, while its neighbour, Little Diomede, is under the ownership of the United States. Contrary to the popular belief that Russia and the US are situated on the opposite ends of the world, these two islands are really not that far off from each other.

Separating these islands is a mere 2.5 mile (approximately 4 kilometers) stretch of water, which, fascinatingly, freezes over during the winter months, forming a temporary bridge of sea ice.
This peculiar geographical arrangement means that during the winter, one could technically traverse from the United States to Russia on this seasonal sea ice.
