GCC set to implement unified tourist visa system

DUBAI: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is set to implement a unified tourist visa system by the end of 2024, according to Khalid Jasim Al Midfa from the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority.

Speaking at the Arabian Travel Market, Al Midfa highlighted the ongoing efforts to streamline the visa process across the six-member bloc, aiming to bolster regional tourism and economic growth, Khaleej Times reported.

“The system will be operational by year’s end. We’re committed to simplifying the process without compromising security,” Al Midfa stated. The new visa, dubbed the ‘GCC Grand Tours’, will permit tourists to stay for extended periods, exceeding the current 30-day limit.

UAE Minister of Economy Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri emphasized the visa’s potential to enhance the region’s appeal as a tourist destination. “The GCC Grand Tours visa will make our region more accessible and economical for travelers,” he said.

The initiative is expected to spotlight the GCC’s varied tourist attractions, encouraging longer stays and boosting hotel occupancy rates. Al Marri expressed these sentiments following discussions at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh.

In preparation for the visa launch, GCC countries are collaborating with major tourism operators to offer comprehensive travel packages. Al Midfa mentioned ongoing negotiations with hotels and airlines to foster partnerships that benefit the entire region.

“The private sector will play a pivotal role in introducing combined travel packages once the single visa is available,” Al Midfa added, noting the importance of aligning major events to maximize the new system’s potential.

Sarah Buhijji, CEO of Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority, also shared plans for regional packages, including a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia to promote joint tourism ventures.

The unified GCC tourist visa is a strategic move to position the Gulf region as a prime destination for both leisure and business travelers worldwide.
