TALLAHASSEE: Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted of aiding Jeffrey Epstein in sexually exploiting young girls, appealed her conviction citing a previous agreement between Epstein and federal prosecutors.
This agreement, criticised by the US Justice Department, granted immunity to Epstein’s alleged co-conspirators. Maxwell’s legal team argued she should be released based on this agreement. However, the United States government lawyers oppose it, stating it doesn’t apply to her case.
The appeal centers on the agreement made nearly two decades ago, focusing on legal aspects rather than disputing trial facts. Maxwell’s appeal claims the Florida plea deal should have prevented further action against her, despite her New York conviction.

During the hearing, her lawyer called the agreement “peculiar” and “unusual,” but prosecutors argued it applied only to Florida.
Maxwell was convicted of luring minors to be sexually abused by her boyfriend Epstein from 1994 till 2004.
Despite Maxwell’s attempts to dismiss the case during trial, including claims of inadequate preparation, the judge upheld the conviction.
The appeals court will announce its decision later.
Maxwell’s prison conditions also drew attention for their relative comfort, despite her crimes. While enjoying privileges like yoga and baking classes, her appeal faces slim chances of success due to the high rate of upheld appeals. If unsuccessful, she will remain incarcerated until 2037.
Victims of Epstein’s sexual abuse demanded that the disgraced socialite needs to be held accountable for her actions. The victims argue that while Maxwell may have certain privileges in prison, she is at least serving time for her crimes.
