Health expert from Pakistan Dr Adnan Hyder becomes Boston University dean

Dr Adnan Hyder

BOSTON: One of America’s top educational institutions, Boston University, has appointed Dr Adnan Hyder as the next dean of the Boston University School of Public Health (SPH). Dr Hyder is a globally recognised physician and scholar in public health, hailing from Pakistan. He will officially assume the role on August 15, 2025, becoming the Robert A. Knox Professor.

The announcement was made earlier this week, by Boston University President Melissa Gilliam and Provost Gloria Waters in a letter to the university community.

Prior to this, Dr Hyder is working at from The George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, where he currently serves as senior associate dean for research and innovation and professor of global health. He has been a member of the GWSPH faculty since 2018.

An expert in global health systems and policy, Hyder has spent over two decades leading health initiatives across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. His research, much of it supported by the National Institutes of Health, has shaped global understanding of the burden and impact of noncommunicable diseases and injuries. He also leads the nation’s first academic center focused on commercial determinants of health.

“I started my career with the mission of social justice, and it aligns so well with SPH – a top-10 school of public health that has grown so much but did not forget its roots,” Hyder said. “My focus is to be in service of a mission and a community that knows its worth, and I have found it at SPH.”

Prior to GWSPH, Hyder served for 20 years on the faculty at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where he held leadership roles in the Department of International Health and the Berman Institute of Bioethics. He holds an MD from Aga Khan University in Pakistan and both an MPH and PhD in public health from Johns Hopkins.

Dr Hyder will succeed former dean Sandro Galea. Since Galea’s departure, Michael Stein, professor and chair of health law, policy & management, has served as interim dean.
