Indian Home Minister Amit Shah presented these bills in August 2023 to repeal and replace colonial-era criminal laws including, the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Indian Evidence Act, many implemented before the country’s independence in 1947.

According to police officials, the new laws aim at delivering justice efficiently rather than focusing on the punishment.

The focus of the laws lies in being victim-centric, strengthening provisions that protect women and minors.

Posters and banners were installed outside police stations to spread awareness regarding the implementation of the new laws.

The laws have come into immediate effect and the criminals will now be tried based on these new provisions. However, those under trial will continue to be prosecuted according to the earlier law.
