Indian parliament suspended after row over Adani allegations

NEW DELHI: The lower house of India’s parliament was suspended for an hour on Wednesday after a disruption over allegations against the Adani group.
This interruption was the result of heated comments arising from serious allegations directed at the Adani group.
These allegations have previously sparked significant debate within political circles and pose substantial implications for the business entity.
The continuing controversy over the Adani group’s activities is also continuing the tensions between political operations and corporate influence in India.
This is not the first time that discussions on Adani group has caused a break in the lower house of the Indian parliament.
On Monday, the parliament was suspended after lawmakers demanded a discussion of bribery allegations against the Adani Group. The call came amidst the company’s major partner TotalEnergies halting investments into the ports-to-power conglomerate.
Last week, the Indian business group’s billionaire chairman, Gautam Adani, and seven other people were charged by US authorities with agreeing to pay around $265 million in bribes to Indian government officials.
The charges related to alleged payments to obtain contracts that could yield $2 billion of profit over 20 years, as well as to develop India’s largest solar power project, news reports said.
The charges also included making misleading statements to the public despite being made aware of the US investigation in 2023.
