Iran executes man convicted of being spy for Israel

Iran

TEHRAN: Iranian authorities executed on Sunday a man convicted of being an agent for Israel’s Mossad spy service, the judiciary said, as fighting raged between the two foes for a tenth day.

“Majid Mosayebi… was hanged this morning after going through the full process of criminal procedure and after his sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website said, adding that he sought to provide “sensitive information … to Mossad.” Iranian authorities have carried out multiple arrests of people suspected of spying for Israel since its attack on June 13.

Iran arrested many of the individuals whom Iran suspected to be spying against Tehran. Earlier on Friday, Iranian authorities arrested a European on suspicion of espionage, local media reported, as war rages between the Islamic Republic and its arch-foe Israel. “A European citizen who sought to spy on sensitive areas of the country” was arrested in southwestern Iran, Tasnim news agency confirmed. “He had been visiting the country as a tourist at the time of the brutal attack by the Zionist regime,” it added, referring to Israel’s June 13 strikes that triggered the war.

Tasnim news agency, citing Iranian police, also said that till Thursday at least 24 other individuals who were accused of spying for Israel were arrested.

It may be noted that Iran’s judiciary on June 16th also hanged a man who was arrested in 2023 and convicted of being a spy for Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency, as fighting raged between the two foes.

Esmaeil Fekri, a Mossad agent convicted of the capital offences of ‘corruption on Earth’ and ‘moharebeh’ (waging war against God) was hanged after going through the full process of criminal procedure,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website said.

Mizan said the execution was carried out after all legal procedures were completed and the verdict was upheld by the supreme court.
