Iran war: Gulf States warn of grave repercussions

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday expressed its profound concern over the continued tensions in the region and the targeting of Iranian nuclear facilities, as President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan called the leaders of other Gulf States.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs “stressed the need for immediate de- escalation to avoid serious repercussions and spare the region from being pulled into deeper levels of instability.”

At the same time, it highlighted the importance of prioritizing diplomacy and dialogue to resolve disputes, through comprehensive approaches that promote stability, prosperity, and justice.

‘COMPREHENSIVE RESOLUTION’

“The UAE reiterated its call on the international community to intensify efforts toward a comprehensive resolution of these sensitive and dangerous developments, to safeguard the region and its peoples from the devastating consequences of conflict.

Furthermore, the ministry urged the United Nations and the UN Security Council to uphold their responsibilities through serious efforts to address the region’s long-standing issues, which now stand at a critical juncture and pose an increasing threat to regional and international peace and security.

It underscored that the ongoing situation necessitates serious engagement to address critical issues through negotiation, underscoring the importance of drawing lessons from the region’s historical experiences and past conflicts.

WISDOM, DIALOGUE, RESTRAINT

On the other hand, WAM – the Emirates News Agency – reported that Nahyan and other leaders of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states focused on “the latest developments in the Middle East and the serious implications of recent attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran for regional peace and security”.

“During the calls, all sides emphasised that the current tensions could have grave repercussions both regionally and globally,” it said.

“They called on all parties to apply wisdom, prioritise dialogue and peaceful solutions, exercise maximum restraint, and avoid further escalation.”

At the same time, the GCC leaders “also reaffirmed their countries’ support for all efforts aimed at de-escalation through diplomatic means”.
