Is Modi changing India’s name?


NEW DELHI: The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has substituted the term “India” with a “Bharat” on dinner invitations for attendees of the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) summit. This move has sparked speculation regarding a potential official name change for the country.

India is hosting the G20 summit this weekend in New Delhi and global leaders have been invited to a state dinner hosted by the “President of Bharat.”

 

“Indian female actor Kangana Ranaut took to ‘X’ to express her pleasure over the possibility of India changing its name, referring to the country’s current official name as a ‘slave name’.

Members of Prime Minister Modi’s right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) advocate for changing the country’s official name. They argue that the term “India” was introduced by British colonizers and symbolizes a period of colonial subjugation.
