NEW DELHI: Former Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla has stated that Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh played a significant role in challenging the government of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh.

He noted that both Bangladesh’s and India’s national security interests have been affected.

Shringla highlighted that the Bangladeshi public, particularly the youth, have been protesting against Hasina Wajid’s administration due to economic difficulties. He added that opposition parties, including BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, have contributed to the unrest.

Shringla said that Jamaat-e-Islami, described as fundamentalist and pro-Pakistan, has been active in the protests, leading to increased violence. He also pointed out that external factors are influencing the situation, “impacting” the national security interests of both Bangladesh and India.

Regarding the impact on India’s national interests, Shringla warned of potential adverse effects. He noted that the outcome of Bangladesh’s upcoming elections could favour radical parties.

He also addressed questions about Sheikh Hasina’s previous asylum in India. She stated that India had granted her refuge from 1975 to 1979 and has a history of providing shelter to neighbouring leaders.
