Kamala Harris concedes defeat to Trump in concessional speech

WASHINGTON: United States (US) Vice President, Kamala Harris, formally conceded the election to Republican Party candidate, Donald Trump, in a concession speech on Thursday.

During the speech, Kamala vowed to continue fighting for issues central to her campaign.

In the concession speech, Kamala stated that “while I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign”.

The Vice President stated that she was committed to the principals of freedom, opportunity, and justice, as they represented the ‘essence’ of the US.

“The fight for freedom, for opportunities, for fairness and the dignity of all people is a fight for the ideals at the heart of our nation, the ideals that reflect [United States] at its best. That is a fight  I will never give up”.

Kamala also mentioned she will focus on several key issues that resonated with her supporters. She said she was determined to advocate for a future where all US citizens could pursue their dreams without government interference.

“I will never give up the fight for a future where all [US citizen] can pursue their dreams, ambitions and aspirations, where women have the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies without government intervention”.

The Vice President also addressed the critical issue of gun violence. “We will never give up the fight to protect our schools and our streets from gun violence”.

 She also confirmed her commitment to democracy, the rule of law and the importance of equal justice for all citizens. “We will never give up the fight for our democracy, for the rule of law, for equal justice and for the fundamental rights and freedoms that must be respected and upheld for everyone”.

Kamala Harris’ concession speech follows a disappointing election outcome for the Democratic Party.

The 2024 US election astonished everyone, as Donald Trump won by overwhelming margin. He snapped voter base from what was traditionally  considered Democratic territory, including women and people of colour.
