DELAWARE: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States has been marred by significant criticism and protests, particularly from the Sikh community supporting the Khalistan Movement.
Reports indicate that prior to Modi’s arrival, officials from the Biden administration met with a group of Sikhs advocating for Khalistan independence. This meeting took place ahead of Modi’s discussions with President Biden during the Quad conference, highlighting tensions surrounding Sikh activism in India.
Modi to mobilise India’s diaspora during US visit
As Modi met with Biden in Delaware, a strong protest erupted outside the conference hall, with Sikh demonstrators expressing their opposition to Modi’s policies. The protests extended beyond Delaware, with demonstrations occurring in several other states across America, further amplifying the voices of those advocating for Khalistan.
International media reports have detailed concerns raised during the pre-visit meeting between US officials and the Sikh representatives. The discussion reportedly included updates on the alleged conspiracy to assassinate Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, a prominent leader of the Khalistan movement, and questions on India’s actions and human rights concerns in the region.
