Mosques set ablaze in religious clashes across Modi’s India

HARYANA: In a spate of religious clashes erupting in Haryana and Uttarakhand’s Haldwani, mosques have been targeted and set on fire, exacerbating tensions and resulting in casualties.

The most recent incident occurred in Haryana, where a mosque was engulfed in flames, leading to the tragic death of the mosque’s imam amidst escalating violence between religious groups.

Similarly, in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani, reports emerged of BJP-affiliated individuals setting fire to a mosque under the pretext of it being “illegally constructed,” resulting in further loss of life and injuries as the situation spiraled out of control.

The communal violence, attributed to the Modi government’s alleged targeting of Muslim communities, has resulted in two confirmed fatalities and over a hundred people sustaining injuries. Arson attacks, stone pelting, and widespread vehicle vandalism have further marred the affected areas.

In response to the escalating turmoil, district authorities hastily imposed curfews in the affected regions, with the Modi government issuing directives to law enforcement to shoot alleged instigators on sight, heightening fears of further bloodshed.

The official death toll, however, has raised concerns after discrepancies emerged in reporting. Nainital District Magistrate Vandana Singh faced scrutiny after the initial death count was mysteriously reduced, raising suspicions of a deliberate attempt to downplay the severity of the situation.

This recent wave of violence against religious minorities echoes past instances of oppression under the Modi government’s tenure, including the controversial construction of the Ram Temple on the site of the demolished Babri Masjid and the demolition of the Akhunji Masjid in New Delhi, further underscoring concerns over religious freedoms and minority rights in India.
