Pakistan-origin Humza Yousaf resigns as Scotland’s First Minister

HOLYROOD: Scotland’s First Minister Humza Yousaf resigned from his position and as leader of the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP) on Monday.

Yousaf’s resignation follows his government’s decision to end a coalition pact with Scotland’s Green Party, sparking political upheaval within the SNP as they hastily seek a replacement leader.

Hamza Yousaf was confronted with impending votes of no confidence, directed both at his leadership and the entirety of the Scottish government. He attributed his resignation to his steadfast refusal to compromise his principles and the repercussions of ending the alliance with the Green Party.

Differences between Yousaf and the Green Party arose due to disagreements regarding climate targets. As tensions escalated, Yousaf faced not one, but two impending votes of no confidence.

In a press conference, Yousaf stated he was “regretful” for underestimating the ramifications of severing ties with the Green Party and the issues it caused his party.

Yousaf assumed office as first minister just over a year ago, succeeding Nicola Sturgeon. During his tenure, the SNP faced several issues, including a funding scandal and internal strife over its political direction.

His departure further adds to the uncertainty surrounding Scotland’s political future.

The SNP’s stability has been compromised due to a funding scandal and the departure of former party leader Nicola Sturgeon last year. Internal disagreements over the party’s political trajectory have further eroded its support among voters.

The SNP faces a challenge from the resurging Labour Party in Scotland, as polling suggests a significant change in voter preferences.

The Scottish parliament has a 28-day window to choose a new first minister, with possible contenders including former SNP leader John Swinney and Kate Forbes, who previously vied for leadership against Yousaf.
