Pakistan voices alarm over recent nuclear material theft in India


Pakistan expressed serious concerns regarding the recent theft of a nuclear material Californium in India, a radioactive substance.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan expressed serious concerns regarding the recent theft of nuclear materials in India, particularly following the theft of Californium, a radioactive substance valued at Rs10 million, from a criminal organisation.

The incident raises significant concerns and alarm, especially considering that three similar theft involving Californium were reported in India in 2021.

The implication of such thefts are huge, as Californium is utilised in various applications, including nuclear reactors and medical treatments.

The potential for the material to fall into the wrong hands poses a huge risk, not only to regional security but also to global safety.

The most alarming possibility is the misuse of radioactive materials can lead to the possibility of nuclear terrorism.

Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), Munir Akram, urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the theft.

He stated that it was critical for the UNSC to adopt effective measures aimed at preventing future incidents of nuclear thefts.

Akram said that the international community needed to remain vigilant, as the proliferation of nuclear materials could destabilise regions and threaten peace.

The theft of Californium showcases the extreme caution needed to safeguard nuclear materials, including ensuring stringent security protocols and international cooperation to safeguard against the illicit trade of radioactive substances.
