MILWAUKEE: The Archewell Foundation, a non-profit organisation created by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, has announced they will be no longer donating to the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition (MMWC), due to pro-Palestinian statements made by the organisations founder, Janan Najeeb.
In early 2024, Najeeb made a blog post on the Wisconsin Muslim Journal titled “From the sea to the river, Palestine will live forever!” The post discussed the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in order to create a European settler colonist state, and the double standard present in how mainstream news outlets have covered the ongoing conflict.
“Why do most news reports say Israelis were killed but Palestinians simply died? When Israeli forces stormed hospitals and schools, American media called them clashes and tension. When a Palestinian throws a rock, he is a militant or she is a terrorist.”
– Janan Najeeb
After the Archewell foundation, who state they “consciously partner with key organisations and leaders to identify immediate needs, build meaningful initiatives, and drive long-term change,” were made aware of the blogpost, they announced they would be “making no additional grants to MMWC.”
The Archewell foundation suggested that Najeeb’s post was akin to hate speech or propaganda.
“As a foundation, we celebrate different perspectives and backgrounds but we have zero tolerance for hateful words, actions or propaganda,” read the letter sent to the Najeeb, according to NewsNations.
“Israel’s 75-year occupation of Palestine and the genocide in Gaza are a grave injustice. We demand a permanent ceasefire, an end to arming the apartheid state of Israel and the liberation of Palestine.”
– Janan Najeeb
Prince Harry and Megan Markle’s organisation specified that the grants were given to help “Afghan women in finding community” and have now removed the MMWC from their network. While the MMWC has not commented on the Archewell foundations decision themselves, their Instagram page had shared posts that discuss the news and ask for support.
