In an official address, the state governor Kathy Hochul stated that the authorities are assessing the situation for potential damage, especially in the face of aftershocks.

Meanwhile, the city’s mayor Eric Adams reassured the citizens to go about their day, while authorities worked to ensure everything “was safe”.

Earthquakes in the region are rare. As per USGS, an inactive fault-line formed millions of years ago was suddenly ‘reactivated’. The organisation also warned of a potential 5 magnitude aftershock in the coming days.

So far no casualties have been reported. However, flights bound for the city were diverted to other locations.
