Referendum for Khalistan being held in New Zealand

New Zealand

AUCKLAND: The Sikh community of New Zealand is holding a referendum in the city of Auckland for a separate independent homeland ‘Khalistan’.

Polling is underway since 9 AM local time, at OT Square in central Auckland. According to sources, long queues had formed even before the voting process had begun.

Members of the Sikh community from Auckland as well as other cities reached early in the morning to participate in the Khalistan referendum.

Prior to the voting process, the traditional yellow paper ceremony was held, during which the participants prayed for the establishment of a separate homeland. They also paid tributes to the activists who laid down their lives in the struggle for Khalistan.

Participants of all ages, including women and the elderly, shouted slogans in favour of Khalistan. Some activists also raised voice against the atrocities committed by India against Sikhs.
