NAKHON SAWAN: The tranquil town of Nakhon Sawan in northern Thailand is mourning the loss of the revered monk, Luang Phor Phat of Wat Huai Duan, who peacefully passed away at the age of 101. The news, announced today by the Facebook page of the Office of the Royal Monk of Vajirajarn, marks the end of a remarkable 77-year journey in monkhood.
The story of the late monk is an interesting one, with fame connected to generosity and controversies related to misappropriation of funds.
Born on May 12, 1922, in Ban Sa Thaen, Yan Matree Sub-district, Phayuha Khiri District, Nakhon Sawan, Luang Phor Phat, known as Phatthan before ordination, dedicated his life to monkhood, beginning his spiritual journey in 1946 at Wat Sa Thaen. His profound teachings were inherited from esteemed monks like Luang Pu Tets, Luang Pu Dam, Luang Pu In, Luang Pu Muek, and Luang Pu Mod.

Luang Phor Phat, recognised for his benevolent contributions, particularly in the creation of sacred objects such as coins, used the proceeds for public welfare. The funds were directed towards initiatives like the renovation of Wat Thara Thaen, the establishment of a hospital, development projects for temples nationwide, and scholarships for children.
In 2021, the revered monk found himself embroiled in a controversy involving the embezzlement of over 60 million baht from Wat Huai Duan. The incident sparked disputes over financial transparency, leading to legal action against the individuals responsible. Fortunately, with the intervention of law enforcement, the embezzled funds were recovered, bringing resolution to the contentious situation.
Luang Phor Phat’s legacy as a spiritual leader and philanthropist will be remembered by the residents of Nakhon Sawan and beyond. As the town mourns his passing, the teachings and contributions of this revered monk will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who were touched by his wisdom and compassion.
