WEB DESK: A powerful earthquake measuring 8.8 magnitude struck off Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula on Wednesday, prompting widespread tsunami warnings and evacuations across the Pacific region, including in Japan, Hawaii, and parts of the US West Coast.

Tsunami waves reaching up to 3-4 metres (10-13 feet) have been reported along the Kamchatka coastline. According to Russian media outlet TASS, several people sustained injuries in the region due to the quake, which was followed by strong aftershocks. Emergency services are on alert as the extent of the damage continues to be assessed.

In Japan, waves of about 30cm (12 inches) were observed in Hokkaido, with authorities urging caution and continuing to monitor coastal areas for further wave activity.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green issued an evacuation advisory, urging residents to move to higher ground and remain calm. “We are working with federal and local agencies to ensure public safety. Please heed evacuation orders and avoid coastal areas until the threat has passed,” he said in a statement.

US President Donald Trump called on Americans living in vulnerable coastal areas to remain vigilant, advising them to stay informed through official channels and to comply with any local emergency directives.

Tsunami warnings and alerts of varying intensities have also been issued in other parts of the Pacific Rim, including coastal areas of China, the Philippines, Indonesia, Guam, Peru, and the Galapagos Islands off Ecuador.

Seismologists have warned of potential aftershocks in the coming hours. Emergency response teams across the region remain on high alert as authorities continue to assess risks and ensure evacuations are carried out where necessary.
