Transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone may also be temporarily shut down to check for damage. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake’s epicenter.

Earlier on October 17, a 5.5 magnitude quake had struck northern Iran. The country is crisscrossed by major geological fault lines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes in recent years.
