South Africa fire kills up to 58

JOHANNESBURG: A devastating fire tore through a multi-story building in Johannesburg, claiming the lives of at least 58 people, as confirmed by emergency services on Thursday.

The tragedy occurred in a structure that had become occupied by homeless individuals.

Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesperson, conveyed that an additional 43 people suffered injuries during the fire outbreak, which erupted in the early hours of the morning. Mulaudzi pointed out that the death toll was expected to rise further, considering the nature of the structure, which effectively functioned as an “informal settlement.”

Mulaudzi emphasized the unprecedented nature of the incident, stating, “Over 20 years in the service, I’ve never come across something like this.”

Rescue operations were in full swing, with firefighters meticulously navigating through the building to retrieve victims, as explained by Mulaudzi. He indicated that 58 bodies had been recovered at that point, but the possibility of additional casualties being trapped inside remained a concern.
