WASHIGTON: In response to the escalating tensions across the globe, stemming from widespread demonstrations primarily in majority Muslim countries against the Israeli airstrikes against Palestinians in Gaza, the US State Department has issued a ‘worldwide caution’ for US citizens.
The caution comes in the wake of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and the killing of Palestinians in occupied West Bank, which have ignited a wave of protests in numerous regions.
The State Department’s advisory serves as a reminder of the potential for terrorist attacks, violent actions, or demonstrations targeting US citizens and American interests worldwide.
As a precaution, the Department of State strongly encouraged US citizens living abroad or traveling internationally to exercise increased vigilance.
In light of the evolving situation, the State Department has issued the following advisory for US citizens:
Stay Vigilant in Tourist Areas
It has urged US citizens to maintain a heightened level of awareness, particularly in locations frequently visited by tourists. The department underscored the importance of remaining attentive to their surroundings and exercising caution during their travels.
Enroll in Smart Traveler Enrollment Programme
The State Department strongly recommended enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Programme (STEP), a service designed to provide valuable information and timely alerts. This enrollment not only keeps US citizens informed about the latest developments but also facilitates their quick and efficient location in case of an emergency overseas.

State Department urges US citizens to leave Lebanon
Meanwhile, the US embassy said that it is closely monitoring the security situation in Lebanon.
It said that on October 17, the State Department issued a travel advisory advising US citizens to not travel to Lebanon due to the unpredictable security situation.
“The Department of State urges US citizens in Lebanon to make plans to depart as soon as possible while commercial options are still available. We recommend that US citizens who choose not to depart prepare contingency plans for emergency situations.”
It further said: “US citizens in Lebanon who need emergency assistance should contact the Department of State using this crisis intake form. Family members can also submit a crisis intake form on behalf of a US citizen family member. The Department of State reminds citizens to avoid demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests as some of these have turned violent.”
