Sudan civil war: Tensions escalate as Rapid Support Forces kill over 120 people

DARFUR: At least 124 people were ruthlessly killed in a recent attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSP) on the Sudanese army on Wednesday.
Around 200 people were critically injured, while the RSF soldiers kidnapped a further 150 people.

The RSF is a paramilitary group with considerable influence and power in the Sudanese Civil War. The RSF has been embroiled in violent clashes with the Sundanese Armed Forces (SAF) since April 2023.
The civil war has its roots in the political turmoil that followed the ouster of former Sudanese Presdient Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
al-Bashir’s removal left a power vacuum after he was removed as a result of widespread protests against his three-decade brutal rule.
A long history of human rights violations and corruption marred the 30-year-long rule of the dictator. Once removed, Sudan entered a fragile transition period aimed at establishing a civilian-led government.
However, the power struggles among military and civilian leaders devolved into a civil war, with the SAF and RSF fighting to gain supremacy.
The Rapid Support Forces on the Sudanese army on Wednesday.is led by General Mohamad Hamdan Dagalo, while the SAF is being headedby Memedti.
The conflict is considered one of deadliest civil wars in rent history. According to sources, more than a million people would be displaced dye to the ongoing civil war.

The civil war has also caused a huge humanitarian crisis, as millions lack proper access to food, clean water and medical care.
The United Nations warned that the ongoing conflict could lead to famine in same parts of the country.
