Tourist’s gang rape in India: Authorities pay financial compensation

STORY: A tourist that was attacked and whose wife was allegedly raped in India received financial compensation from Indian authorities on Monday (March 4).

Indian police have detained three men and are searching for four others accused of attacking two tourists and gang-raping the woman, authorities and the couple said.

The couple, who identified themselves as Vicente and Fernanda to Spanish TV channel Antena 3, said in a video interview that the men raped Fernanda and hit Vicente repeatedly.

The couple said they had camped out near the site where they were attacked because they could not find hotels nearby.

Police found the couple, who are Spanish citizens, around 11PM local time (1730 GMT) on Friday (March 1) on a roadside, looking like they had suffered a beating, Pitamber Singh Kherwar, superintendent of police in Dumka in eastern India, told reporters.

Deputy Commissioner of Dumka, Anjaneyulu Dodde said, “According to the victim compensation scheme, the committee formed under the supervision of the judge took a decision to award one million Indian rupees ($12,000 approx.) on March 3. We have immediately transferred the amount to her husband’s account after converting it into euros.”
