Trump thinks Israel and Iran will not go to war in future

THE HAGUE: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said he thinks Israel and Iran would not go to war again and reminded the audience that he had ensured ceasefire between the two countries.

Addressing a press conference after the NATO summit, Trump said the two countries were “tired” and “exhausted” and had fought “viciously”, as he replied to a question in which a reporter asked him about the reason behind his confidence.

The US president said he was confident Tehran would pursue a diplomatic path towards reconciliation.

“I’ll tell you, the last thing they want to do is enrich anything right now. They want to recover,” he said.

Meanwhile, he earlier in the day before the NATO summit said Iran hit Israel very hard. “It’s a tremendous victory for Iran.”

“Israel was hit very hard. Those ballistic missiles took a lot of buildings,” the US president admitted. He remarked later at the press conference that they [the US] could not rely on the Israeli intelligence.

MAY OR MAY NOT

But in the same breath, he said the conflict between the two countries could start again.

“I dealt with both and they’re both tired, exhausted… and can it start again? I guess someday, it can. It could maybe start soon,” Trump told reporters.

However, Trump said Iran would never be able to develop nuclear weapons, as he again reiterated that the US strikes had completely destroyed the country’s installations.

Meanwhile, Trump opined that the US-Iran talks might be held next week. The US was ready for talks, if any came for a dialogue, he remarked.

However, he added that drawing up an agreement with Iran wasn’t necessary because brokering a ceasefire was a massive achievement.

“We’re going to talk to them next week, with Iran. We may sign an agreement. I don’t know. To me, I don’t think it’s that necessary,” Trump said.

‘WE ARE NOT TAKING OVER OIL’

About his earlier statement in which he had asserted that China can continue buying the Iranian oil, Trump told reporters that it was up to China to procure oil from Iran or the US.

Explaining his point, the US president said China should buy oil from Iran, if Tehran needs money for reconstruction of the country.

It can prove to be a noticeable change in the United States’ policy towards Iran, as Washington has been previously cripple Iran’s economy to force it accept the conditions.

“They’re going to need money to put that country back into shape. We want to see that happen,” Trump said, but added that the US has not given up its maximum pressure on Iran.

“We are not taking over oil,” said Trump – an important statement given that the people around the globe have been saying that the US involvement in the Middle East revolves around oil.

On Tuesday, Trump had stated that he does not want to see “regime change” in Iran, which he said would lead to chaos.

‘THEY ARE GOOD TRADERS’

Talking to reporters alongside Rutte before the NATO summit, Trump again berated Israel and Iran.

“They’ve had a big fight, like two kids in a schoolyard. You know, they fight like hell, you can’t stop them. Let them fight for about 2-3 minutes, then it’s easy to stop them,” he said.

In response, Rutte laughed and said: “And then daddy has to sometimes use strong language to get (them to) stop.”

On Tuesday, after a ceasefire deal, Trump had raised eyebrows by saying Israel and Iran had been fighting “so long and so hard that they don’t know what the fuck they’re doing”.
